Why no mention of forum or groups in community tools. Do they have a role?

Nick, thanks for your question from our Cisco seminar.  It is a great question and a well observed point.  The simple answer is that we focus on the creation of niche groups on the web and forums simply demand volume that the niche sites do not have.  There is nothing worse that going to a site where the forum is stale and empty and the tumbleweed is visably rolling through.

For us, so much of what a forum offers can be delivered by a well constructured blog (in our case the cobblers children rule applies).  A forum comes into its own when a number of core elements are in place.

  1. The site is a popular destination site for a broad topic area (popular means tens of thousands of uniques)
  2. There is an active and regular dialogue through other tools on a site, such as a blog - have  a look at Techcrunch
  3. The conversations can and need to be structured ie they are topic specific, they require participation and not simply comment, they are built on themes and the can run over time.

We will add them into our next presentation.  Thanks for spotting a gap.
