Consistency of message was what I have taken out of the morning session at Web 2.0 Strategies '08.  Still a relatively small gathering with a feel that the balance of people were those with an application to promote as opposed to an interest fired by the value it can bring to their respective organisations.  That said there were some valuable points to relay.

1. Conviction of value from the panel was clear. It was innate, deep seated and only after things had taken off in a form that many had not yet envisaged, did the tangible ROI get defined. Therefore it still takes a company to have conviction to start these things, and the early investment cost is high - maybe not on a monetary basis, but certainly on a personal one, especially if the early justifications is "trust me, the value is in here, I just can't tell you exactly where yet.

2. Lack of failure. Dion Hinchcliffe made a plea for anyone who know of a "failed" deployment to speak up. He is yet to hear of one. It makes sense really. If you don't define the success criteria up front and you let the value emerge, why should there ever be a failure? Just have the conviction to see it through the early stage.

3. Adoption and Culture are key. There are many best practice guides referred to, but if people use it and are encouraged to do so, but in their own way then of course that is where the value comes from. Just make sure the technology can understand how to look and manipulate the underlying data volumes, so intelligence can be brought back out.

Pleased to have been there.  Jon is doing the second half of the day so more from him shortly...
