Have you heard of Kate Modern? You probably will soon.
Some headline stats:
- 3m views in 3 weeks
- Shown 5 days a week (each episode is only 2 mins long)
- Zero production spend.
What TV producer/ owner would'nt love to have that level of stats and potential to sell advertising around the programme.
Well it actually is from Bebo (one of the social networking sites) rather than a traditional TV program. These are the sort of Stats that we think should have all Content producers and owners looking up and embracing the web as a means of producing and distributing content.... as we keep saying the rules of the game have fundamentally changed.
The original article in the Telegraph online
What are your views - is this the beginning of a wave of user generated TV (see my previous blog) and what do the networks such as ITV, BBC and C4 need to do to respond to this?

Interestingly there was an interview on Radio 4 this morning with Vint Cerf from Google talking about regulation of the Internet. The point was that as the world moves more to user generated content, provided that it is lawful (google/ youtube will remove unlawful content), then there is no filter Google are willing to apply. The analogy from Vint is that "the network" provides the road and it is the users who choose the cars they want to drive. I can see lots of regulators and politicians struggling with this and looking to take a line on what is "good" and "bad" content. On a slightly different note, I have huge respect for the Today programme on R4 but having tried to join their message boards to debate this there have found it a wholly frustrating experience and am none the wiser.

UG content is really very compelling for the platform owner IF is any good and is not deflamatory or too offensive. But who is to say what is good any more? The BBC?
