I recently attended a closed door seminar, the SpeakEasy 2007 run by Buy.at, one of the UK's leading affiliate networks founded by Steve Brown (a fellow ex KPMG'er).
Of all the presentations and conversations, I took away three insights from the day which I wanted to share:
1) the retail value of the UK affiliate industry has grown from £600m in 2004 to £2.15bn in 2006; the value of the commissions paid has increased from £46m to £122m over the same period;
2) talking to one of the internet marketing team from of one supermarket chains shared with me that they had grown their online team by 50% over the past 6 months and were continuing to invest heavily in this area.
3) insights from buy.at surveys showed that the key issues flagged by businesses in the online space were:
a) growing profitable online busines
b) customer acquisition and retention
c) implementing innovation and technology.
My take, having attended this conference for the last 2 years is that the affiliate industry is right at the forefront of web developments leading the way in the use of innovative technology and harnessing the power of the web.
Hats off to Steve Brown and his team at buy.at for continuing to run such a great forum for creating dialogue and ideas sharing around getting value from the web.
