Wiki ROI - final thoughts

Just some final thoughts around the ROI case for Wikis and to pull together some conversations that have been happening off-blog.Luis was kind enough to get in touch and shed some light on some of my assumptions. Yes, he is internally facing but evidently does have some contact with customers - but mainly uses IM, Facebook or Twitter to communicate rather than email! I personally find it interesting that Facebook starts to become a one-to-one business communication channel as opposed to something like LinkedIn!Ross Mayfield from SocialText was kind enough to link and point out that he sees a 30%...

Web 2.0 ROI - cost saving or revenue growth

The intuitive view around the ROI of Web 2.0 tools such as blogs and wikis tends to be that using Web 2.0 on external sites grows revenue, your blog can gain you extra customers and brand loyalty. Using Web 2.0 internally saves cost by making your employees more efficient.I have always had a slight suspiscion around the cost saving argument. If you look at the logic behind my recent post on Luis Suarez's effort to stop using email, although you can point to the amount of time saved and translate that into cash savings, it is not that simple. Even...

Wikis as alternatives to email - find the ROI

There's a really interesting article on CIO.com with Ross Mayfield, the co-founder of Socialtext. In it, he talks about how wikis can end 'Reply-All' email threads.Luis Suarez of IBM has taken it a step further, and on 15th February gave up on work related email. The idea would be that he would refuse to respond or initiate email communication and would instead communicate via social networking tools such as those provided internally by IBM. If you read a little closer, he doesn't completely give up on email, and recognises that for certain private conversations where sensitive information is exchanged, email...

Web 2.0 to manage business process exceptions - another ROI

Social software/Web 2.0 tools such as blogs/wikis/instant messaging can be a great way to manage the exceptions to your business processes. Here's why...In a previous life, I was an SOA Evangelist for IBM's WebSphere integration suite. A large amount of IT spend in the early 2000s went on systems like this one to integrate processes, both internally and with suppliers and customers. The idea was one of cost reduction, reduce the cost of doing business by reducing the time it took to add a customer to a vendor list from 3 days to minutes. The ROI cases were strong and...

Why are corporates scared of social software?

Great post by Sam Lawrence on how organisations have been scared of developments in collaborative software (email, instant messaging, and now social networking) over the years but now are regarded as mainstream. Could the same be true for Web 2.0/wikis/blogs?

ROI of Social Software

A lot of social software evangelists hate the ROI argument. We like to compare it to the ROI of email and phones and complain that no-one ever asks an ROI proof for those technologies. We like cartoons like these:Yet the fact of the matter is that the people signing the cheques tend to be 1.0 thinkers. Those of us who want people to get people to buy this stuff have to be able to talk their language. And that's "Value" and "ROI".I think most ROI discussions fail because people go straight to the ROI of their favourite social software platform...

Case study on wiki use for revenue growth

I attended a webinar last night hosted by PBwiki titled "Growing in a down market with PBwiki". All in all it was very interesting - I can't find a replay link at the moment but when I do I'll post it. Here are the main points:The webinar went very smoothly. This is not to be underestimated, I've lost count of the number of webinars where there are problems with sound/video but this was great. Slides/screenshare and question submission was handled by GoToMeeting - and I was very happy to find out I could stream the audio via Ustream rather than...

ROI discussion at Web 2.0 Strategies

Following on from Ed's post, was at the Web 2.0 Strategies forum today and took part in a social software ROI discussion. The discussion wandered quite easily onto the ROI of blogging or the ROI of wikis, and the features and functions which add business value. This has never really helped develop the ROI case for Web 2.0 or Enterprise 2.0 and didn't in this case. It got more interesting when we turned our attention to a problem that Web 2.0 could solve (maybe using blogs or wikis). For example, if a software company has a problem where support calls cost...

How to sell Enterprise 2.0

Came across a presentation by Mike Kavis on how to sell SOA. It's a great presentation and worth registering to listen to.I was struck by the parallels between how we try to position Enterprise 2.0 or Web 2.0 and his story around implementing SOA. His view on how they had been successful was:They engaged the business in their language - profit and loss rather than technology. This key getting sponsorship for Enterprise 2.0 which is vital for successful projects. Even if we evangelists don't like ROI, the people who sign the cheques do.The business doesn't care about governance. When implementing...
