Social Networking and the Big White Elephant hunt...

Euan Semple's blog flashed up on my RSS with "Ignore Gartner". Having had a long relationship with Gartner, as a client and user, I could think of many an occasion in the past where Gartner reports would effectively kick a big hole in a thought process, only to find, with passage of time, that they missed the obvious and life went on as we always felt it would. So I looked at Euan's blog, following the link to the article that he was referring to and YUP, agreed 100% with the sentiment of the blog - Ignore Gartner in reference...

Serena Software adopts Facebook Fridays

This caught my eye recently, amongst all the press about companies banning Facebook and it being generally bad for productivity and business, Serena Software has launched Facebook Fridays. The idea is that for one hour every Friday employees should spend time on Facebook, collaborating with colleagues and customers and recruiting. Interestingly, the approach includes one of the key components to a successful internal collaboration project, which is sponsorship. Not just in terms of warm words, but actual engagement from senior management. In this case, a Senior VP and the CEO are using their profiles on Facebook as an example of what...

Did you hear Peter Day on In Business tonight? Have a listen if you didn't...This is going to come out the wrong way, but it was very refreshing to hear a non-Gen Y leading such a debate without a hint of contempt and misgiving in their voice. Anyway, best fact I heard ... Campus Recruiter lead in Ernst and Young in the US confirmed that in 2 year the Gen Y population in his business will be 50% of the workforce and you don't have to listen to the programme to guess what tools they are demanding.Good to hear Mark Forster at Cisco...
No really, how do you build a social network?

Can't wait to tell you about a group of people we have recently been introduced to. We have started a project with them and over the next few months it will be fascinating to see how things pan out. They are all singularly impressive, each having very engaging "life stories" and not one is a shy in saying what they think. We met through a referral and the person who introduced us, sold us in as "people who knew everything about social networking". Clearly that is not true for so many reasons, but is did afford the luxury to, shall we...
Social Networking for the Enterprise

Well - have just returned from Lotusphere in Orlando which is IBM's conference for customers and partners for its collaboration software. I must admit I was a little apprehensive about the content - when I worked for IBM Lotus was exclusively (and somewhat obsessively) focused on what seemed to be a doomed struggle between Notes/Domino and Outlook/Exchange.However, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there were announcements around and a focus on the Notes/Domino platform but the attention was very heavily centred around Web 2.0. Not only have IBM announced new versions of Connections and Quickr, but also new products - Lotus...
Why contribute to a social networking site?

Something I learned from my recent trip to Lotusphere was the idea that the motivation for content contributors is very different from the motivation for content seekers, and that to increase adoption rates it is essential to cater for both groups (as well as understand that an individual might fall into both camps, and therefore be subject to different motivations at different times even when using the same site).Studies consistently show that it is usually only 2-3% of a community that are the stars or champions, and consistently post content.Well, YouTube is now offering a very obvious motivation - money....
brands buying into social networking

Social networking - so tantalising for all those brands out there - millions of people in your target market all in one place - how do I get in there and sell to this captive market. I can see lots of brand managers grappling with this one - spurred on by their directors - we have to get into this social networking thing - its where all the buzz is.Here's the view of one blog commentator:http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2008/06/17/how-brands-can-buy-social-media/In essence - the article outlines that value comes from three areas:- Advertisements - straight purchase of ads- Sponsorships - longer term form of advertising- Social...
